This tutorial shows you how to set up Microsoft Outlook 2007 to work with your e-mail account. This tutorial focuses on setting up Microsoft Outlook 2007, but these settings are similar in other versions of Microsoft Outlook. You can set up previous versions of Microsoft Outlook by using the settings in this tutorial.

To set up an Internet e-mail account through Microsoft Outlook 2007, follow these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook 2007. The Microsoft Outlook 2007 Startup wizard will displays automatically as below:

    Outlook 2007 Startup Window

  2. Click Next on the Outlook 2007 Startup window then will display window as below:

    E-mail Accounts

  3. Click Next on the E-mail Accounts window then will display window as below and then check the "Manually configure server settings or additional server types", then click Next button.

    Internet E-mail Settings

  4. For the Email Service to send and receive e-mail messages, select Internet E-mail, and then click Next.

    Email Service

  5. On the Internet E-mail Settings window, enter your information as follows:

    User Information
Your Name: Your first name and last name
    Email Address: Your email address

    Server Information
    Account Type: select POP3
    Incoming mail server: mail.yourdomain.com
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.com

    Logon information
User Name:  Your email address, again
    Password: Your email account password

Check the Remember Password, then click More Settings

  6. On the Internet E-mail Settings window, go to the Outgoing Server tab. Tick My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

  7. Still on the Internet E-mail Settings window, go to the Advanced tab you can set the ports. If your e-mail provider offers a generous inbox (1 GB or more) it is a good idea to check the Leave a copy of messages on the server. This way, if you have any problems with your PC and you lose your e-mail messages, you will always have them on the mail server and you can download them back once your PC is repaired. By default, Outlook 2007 does not have this option enabled. Another recommendation is to also check the 'Remove from server when deleted from Deleted Items' option. This helps you optimize the space used on your mail server by deleting all the undesired messages.

  8. Click the Test Account Settings button. The Test Account Settings dialog box shows you what's happening while Outlook tests the entered settings to see if you got everything right.

  9. The wizard will now end and show you a congratulations message. Click on Finish and you are done.

  10. If you've made all the correct settings, you will be able to retrieve your e-mail messages.
