Logo Design for Lontar Usada Bali http://lumonata.com/articles/latest-works/logo-design-for-lontar-usada-bali.html http://lumonata.com/articles/latest-works/logo-design-for-lontar-usada-bali.html/#comment_box_88

Lontar Usada Bali is a community founded by people who wanted to preserve lontar usada. Lontar is manuscript made of dried palm leaves that used as paper in the old times, link to wikipedia with more explanation here. Lontar usada is palm leaves manuscript that explain about traditional medication.

We were contacted to design their logo. Well, since it's an interesting project and it's for a good cause so we just jump right in. The biggest challenge is actually in the time frame, we only have about a week to complete it because they have to use the logo in some publications for an event which will happen soon. We are also provided with the logo that they created internally.

The previous logo use the lontar as the base of the logo, so we keep it because that is what the community is about. However we simplify the shape so it can be applied easier. We also remove the Balinese letter inside the lontar due to scalability issue. Below are the larger view of the logo that has been approved, we created the horizontal and vertical version for usage flexibility.

Logo in horizontal format

Logo in vertical format

If you look at the logo, it has 9 holes, 3 in each piece of the lontar. The Balinese lontar is usually made with 3 holes in each piece while the 9 holes is represent the 9 holes in human body.

QueNeno Web Design http://lumonata.com/articles/latest-works/queneno-web-design.html http://lumonata.com/articles/latest-works/queneno-web-design.html/#comment_box_87 A few weeks ago we launch a website that we did for QueNeNo, a group of independent oriflame consultants. They wanted to have a website that will help them manage their downline, interact with them and help them in growing their business. They also need to be able to attract new member with an easy to access registration form. The member will also get regular online training through the website and see their daily to monthly progress through the member area.

As usual, we start the work by developing a wireframe. The main purposes of the wireframe process are to let us focus on the functionality and the layout of each webpage.

We discuss the wireframe with the client, some changes were requested and we also made some other adjustment to match the goal better. Once the wireframe is approved, we continue to the design development.

The registration form are put on the footer and appear on every pages to make registration easier. You can see some more pictures here at our portfolio page or go directly to the website

For example, if you have two different email accounts, joe@example.com and joseph@example.com, you could forward joe@example.com to joseph@example.com so that you do not need to check both accounts. Note that the forwarded mail will still be delivered to the original address as well.

History of Ferrari logo http://lumonata.com/articles/random-notes/history-of-ferrari-logo.html http://lumonata.com/articles/random-notes/history-of-ferrari-logo.html/#comment_box_69 francesco-baracca

This morning  I heard on radio the story behind of Ferari logo. I think it is a wonderful story to share. The black prancing horse with yellow background on Ferrari logo was added by Enzo Ferrari the founder of Ferrari because of Countess Paulina advice.

The horse was painted on the fuselage of the fighter plane of Francesco Baracca, Countess Paulina's son. Francesco Baracca is a heroic man of the first world war. One day Countess Paulina said to Ferrari "Ferrari, put my son’s prancing horse on your cars. It will bring you good luck". The horse was, and still is, black, and he added the canary yellow background which is the colour of Modena.

And now, the Ferrari logo is look like this

How to Set Up Your POP Email in Microsoft Outlook 2007 http://lumonata.com/articles/tutorials/how-to-set-up-your-pop-email-in-microsoft-outlook-2007.html http://lumonata.com/articles/tutorials/how-to-set-up-your-pop-email-in-microsoft-outlook-2007.html/#comment_box_67 This tutorial shows you how to set up Microsoft Outlook 2007 to work with your e-mail account. This tutorial focuses on setting up Microsoft Outlook 2007, but these settings are similar in other versions of Microsoft Outlook. You can set up previous versions of Microsoft Outlook by using the settings in this tutorial.

To set up an Internet e-mail account through Microsoft Outlook 2007, follow these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook 2007. The Microsoft Outlook 2007 Startup wizard will displays automatically as below:

    Outlook 2007 Startup Window

  2. Click Next on the Outlook 2007 Startup window then will display window as below:

    E-mail Accounts

  3. Click Next on the E-mail Accounts window then will display window as below and then check the "Manually configure server settings or additional server types", then click Next button.

    Internet E-mail Settings

  4. For the Email Service to send and receive e-mail messages, select Internet E-mail, and then click Next.

    Email Service

  5. On the Internet E-mail Settings window, enter your information as follows:

    User Information
Your Name: Your first name and last name
    Email Address: Your email address

    Server Information
    Account Type: select POP3
    Incoming mail server: mail.yourdomain.com
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.com

    Logon information
User Name:  Your email address, again
    Password: Your email account password

Check the Remember Password, then click More Settings

  6. On the Internet E-mail Settings window, go to the Outgoing Server tab. Tick My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

  7. Still on the Internet E-mail Settings window, go to the Advanced tab you can set the ports. If your e-mail provider offers a generous inbox (1 GB or more) it is a good idea to check the Leave a copy of messages on the server. This way, if you have any problems with your PC and you lose your e-mail messages, you will always have them on the mail server and you can download them back once your PC is repaired. By default, Outlook 2007 does not have this option enabled. Another recommendation is to also check the 'Remove from server when deleted from Deleted Items' option. This helps you optimize the space used on your mail server by deleting all the undesired messages.

  8. Click the Test Account Settings button. The Test Account Settings dialog box shows you what's happening while Outlook tests the entered settings to see if you got everything right.

  9. The wizard will now end and show you a congratulations message. Click on Finish and you are done.

  10. If you've made all the correct settings, you will be able to retrieve your e-mail messages.

How to ping your servers http://lumonata.com/articles/tutorials/how-to-ping-your-servers.html http://lumonata.com/articles/tutorials/how-to-ping-your-servers.html/#comment_box_66 Ping is a way of how to test connection between two location in internet ( your computer and the traget server that you try to test ). The result that you will get is the report of time it takes to get response. This is the esiest way to test if your server is "up" or not.

Here are some totrials that we can explain to you about how to do ping test to your server in different Operating System (Windows, Mac OS X and UNIX / LINUX etc) :

Windows Operating System

  • Open up the Windows command prompt by clicking on the the Start button, going to Run… and then type in CMD. Now, press the enter key on your keyboard and the command window should open.
  • Type in ping, leave a space and then type in the domain name or IP address you wish to test. For example, if you wanted to ping our website, you would type:

    ping yourdomain.com
  • Your last step, would be to hit the enter button on your keyboard.

Mac OS X

  • On Mac OS X, you will need to navigate to the Applications folder > Utilities > and then the Network Utility.
  • Once the Network Utility is running, click on the ping tab and specify a domain or IP address to check.
  • To see the results of your test, click on “Ping”.

UNIX/Linux/Etc:

  • Linux users can also ping any location on the web. They just need to open a telnet/terminal window.
  • Next, you will need to type in “ping domain name” or “ping IP Address” replacing the IP address or domain name with the variable you would like to test. (such as with the Windows example above)
  • Now, press the enter button on your keyboard to see the ping results. To stop the ping results in Linux hit the keyboard combination Ctrl + C.

The results of your ping test, on Windows, OS X and Linux should look something like this:

C:\WINDOWS\System32>ping yourdomain.com
Pinging yourdomain.com [

Our Website Redesign Process http://lumonata.com/articles/latest-works/our-website-redesign-process.html http://lumonata.com/articles/latest-works/our-website-redesign-process.html/#comment_box_64 As some of you might already know, last month was our 4th anniversary and we feel that it's time for us to update our website. Ok, we admit that our old website was made in such a rush, we were starting out this company and we needed a website to represent ourselves as soon as possible. But anyhow we got many works from the website and after 4 years we feel that we need a fresher look.

Our old website

Now that you are seeing our new website, we thought that it would be nice if we share our process of redesigning the website. So without any further ado, here it is.

Setup Goal

As we already mention, our old website was made in such a rush. There are couple areas of the website that we feel are lacking. Some are; it doesn't show our work very well and it doesn't also represent who we are and what we are capable of. After a couple of discussion and brainstorming with the team, there are several goals that we want to achieve through the new website:

  1. It should present our works better
  2. It can be used as a source of information for our prospective clients, existing clients, fellow designers and developers and design/IT students.
  3. It should provide our prospective clients an easy way in providing their project details that they are interested to work with us. This is important because it will help us in providing a proper proposal faster and more efficient.
  4. Better visual appearance is a must!
  5. Works on mobile browser

Content Preparation

Once we know the goal of the redesign, we start by making a checklist of contents needed for the new site. Since the site will have a content management system (CMS) and the CMS we are using is our new released CMS called Arunna, we don't need to have the final content ready at this stage. We can always make changes of the content through the CMS, at least we have a solid idea of what will be put in each page.

There are some illustrations and icons that we are also planning to use in the website, especially on the about us and services page.

Wireframe, Design and Development

We always start the design by creating the wireframe first, the purposes of the wireframe process are to let us focus on the functionality and the layout of each webpage. Any changes needed can be done quickly and it's an effective way to do rapid prototyping and measure the effectivity of a layout. Once the wireframes are agreed, then we start developing the design of the webpages.

Wireframe that we develop during the redesign process

With more and more user accessing internet using mobile device; tablet and smartphone, the website needs to be easily accessed via mobile browser, we need to think about how the layout will fall on small screen size and make sure that the user can read the content easily using their smartphone. We develop 3 versions of the layout to accommodate desktop monitor, tablet monitor and smartphone monitor. We developed the website using a method called responsive web design so the website can automatically adjust  to a range of screen size without requiring the mobile website to be in separate URL..

You can try accessing it using your iphone, android phone or blackberry, you can also try resizing your desktop browser to see it in action.

Server Migration Schedule http://lumonata.com/articles/server/server-migration-schedule.html http://lumonata.com/articles/server/server-migration-schedule.html/#comment_box_61 We are excited to inform you that our server is scheduled for migration to a brand new server starting on August 8, 2011. This new server offers better performance, dependability, and an updated operating system. This post will explain in further detail the benefits of the migration along with how the migration process will work. If you have any additional questions, feel free to post them in the thread.

If you are one of our clients, then you will receive an email from us when your account begins its migration and when it completes its migration. These migration process will also include the new server's IP address, the new name servers, as well as the new IP addresses for custom name servers.

You are free to continue making updates to your accounts as needed. However, once you receive the notice letting you know your account migration has started, it is best to refrain from making updates until you receive the second email notice letting you know that your migration is completed and you have updated your name servers.

I first wanted to make it clear that we are dedicated to making this migration as seamless as possible. We understand that moving a website to a new server is a big deal, which is why we are taking every precaution imaginable to ensure there is no downtime or configuration issues on the new server.

Operating System Upgrade

All of the servers we are migrating are currently running CentOS 4.8. Once the migration is complete, everyone will be using the latest branch of CentOS 5. Although you will not immediately notice any big changes in terms of account functionality, this upgrade will make it much easier for us to support newer applications and scripts that depends on other software.

Notification

Before we start the migration process, we will send at least one eamil warning to each customers. In this phase, we suggest our customers to stop updating their website untill the migration process finish. Once the migration process is finish, we'll send the last email to our customers that inform the migration has finished, so they can continue updating their website.

Early Migration

Although we are confident in our migration system, we completely understand if you are nervous about the server change. If you have an e-commerce or a similar website that receives a lot of traffic during the holiday season, you may request a manual migration prior to the automated migration mentioned above. To request a manual migration, please send us an email to support@lumonata.com and indicate that you would like for your account to be migrated manually before the automated migration.

If you have any questions that are not account specific, feel free to post them in this thread.

Implementing Arunna on our new website http://lumonata.com/articles/random-notes/implementing-arunna-on-our-new-website.html http://lumonata.com/articles/random-notes/implementing-arunna-on-our-new-website.html/#comment_box_54 Starting in early year of 2009, we decide to upgrade our backend CMS system that we've developed. And yes, i got the duty to develop it internally. It was a long road to start and many challanges has been faced. A lot of idea came while developing it, which is really distructing my focus to achive the goal. But since that day, i realise that idea is always changes, that's why we have to start execute it.

In the beginning, the main purpose of this project were to create CMS for interen use to increase our productivity when we developing a website. But then the idea was changed. We prefer not just to create the CMS but it has to be a tools that can grabbed potential people to join the community and communicate with them. Some people ask me, "Why you build a new engine for this, there are so many opensource system out there like Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla etc?".

Well, we love all of them. And we learn a lot of things from WordPress and Joomla. Sometimes we contribute to the community too. But the wired thing is, we rarly use it as our CMS for our clients. Why? Most of our clients needs are very complex and we couldn't use it as the backend system. We believe that each company either the company in the same fields, has different needs and different way to solve their problems. So that's why we try to investing our best skills and time to developing this project. The other reason is our idealism. Most of us are only using the CMS system without contribution. We make money from them but not help them getting stable. Now we came with our new local platform to help spread and share information and knowledge.

Arunna is opensource platform that you can download it here. Untill i write this, arunna project is still on alpha stage, which mean that a lot of things still need to be fixed and expanded. Arunna is not only CMS system that help you to create website and increase your productivity, but arunna is also aqupped with social media features. With arunna, you can create your company website, blog and also close social media to engage with your clients, staff and business relations.

With social media features at your backend system, now the functionality of your backend system is not just to manage your website or blog content. But you can use it to communicate with your clients or co-worker and share your task easily. In the future you even don't need emails to communicate and share task with your co-worker. You just need to login to your company website or mobile apps (which is still under development). So all conversation will be trackable without copy or blind copy your emails.

If you already visit this blog, i am sure that you also visit our company profile. All features that you see here, are managed in one platform. We just create plugins to build the portfolio section, quotation request form etc. With all that features that we build, we increase our productivity. Some more features are still in development process, especially the social media features. But we try to move fast and give the best solutions. If you want to contribure in developing arunna, you can join our developer team at github.

Here are some screenshot of the arunna backend system:

If you want to know more about the social media features or more project updates, just visit arunna website.
